Cammy: Saints to ‘do a Leicester’? Do me a favour!

- By Danny Stewart SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Cammy Smith laughs off Tony Fitzpatrick’s suggestion St Mirren can “do a Leicester City” and win the Scottish Premiership next season.

However, as the former Aberdeen striker looks ahead a return to the top flight next season, he insists he and his team-mates will not be going up just to make up the numbers.

“Tony has been brilliant with me,” he said. “He is a really nice guy and a St Mirren man, who has both played for and managed the club.

“He deserves this success as much as anyone. “We are not naive enough, though, to think we are going to have as much of the ball and dominate games the way we have.

“That is simply not going to happen as much. “At the same time, we have a manager and we have got players who aren’t just going to want to go up for the sake of being there.

“First of all we need to establish ourselves in the league.

“We need to stay in the league. That is a hard challenge in itself.

“Once we can do that, the club has potential to build and build again.

“There is no point resting. We need to not get carried away with ourselves.

“There is a difference and we know there is a lot of work to be done but we know we have got the right players.

“With a few new faces around the place, we can, hopefully, do well.”

Smith is one of the PFA Scotland nominees for Championship Player of the Year, a fact which he says put the icing on the cake in terms of his season.

“We got the title mathematically tied up and before we went off to celebrate the manager pulled me off to one side and let me know about the nomination,” Smith revealed.

“That made it that extra bit special.

“It’s a big thing for me, and I have my move to St Mirren to thank for it because playing every week has made a massive difference to my game.

“Playing in a good team and enjoying my football has been great and, hopefully, will only get better next year.”

Stirling Albion fans have been given the chance to choose the Forthbank side’s home kit for the next two seasons.

Three red-and-white designs from Italian company, Macron, are on display on the club’s website.

Members of the Stirling Albion Supporters’ Trust are being asked to choose from a two-tone raised weft Arsenal-style kit, a shirt with a polo collar as well as an outfit with two different shades of red. Nominations should be emailed to office@ stirlingalbionfc.co.uk
