Coronation Street has faced controversy over hard-hitting storylines. So, are TV soaps becoming just too bleak?

-

The plots have been a bit dark lately. There’s plenty doom and gloom in the real world so it is nice to have a bit of a giggle. Joan Fordyce, Forfar

Some subjects do need to be tackled, but in a believable way. I would like TV to have more balance. What happened to all the comedy? Fiona

Reid, Forfar

If you want comedy there are plenty of comedies about. I respect the Corrie producers for bringing difficult situations to the fore. Life isn’t always rosy. Irene

Thomson, Perth

Coronation Street has changed with the times but we need a few pleasant stories. These poor folk are competing with Midsomer Murders and Jeremy Kyle now! Judi Martin, Aberdeenshire

We hear enough bad news in reality so I think soaps and other entertainment should be a bit lighter. We live in difficult times and need some light relief. Liz

Kelly, Glasgow

TV in general is too full of sex and violence. They should have more dramas that know where to draw the line. Margaret Brown, Rutherglen

Tackling these issues may be a good thing, but many programmes try to be true to life yet go over the top. Nowadays, TV is so depressing. James

G. Plenderleith, Edinburgh

A lot of the soaps are going down the wrong road. Most plots are unbelievable, far-fetched and run for too long. This is not “everyday living”.

Linda Cox, Aberdeen

I’m a comedy man, and I think soaps should be replaced with such classics as Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, Benny Hill and The Muppet Show. Telly’s getting too grumpy. Bring back the laughter! Davie Kerr,
