Morelos could move as Gerrard era gathers pace

- By Mark Walker sport@sundaypost.com

Turkish outfit, Besiktas, are set to make an ambitious move to sign Rangers’ top scorer Alfredo Morelos on loan.

And flop Mexican striker, Eduardo Herrera, is wanted by a club back in his homeland as the Steven Gerrard revolution starts to gather pace.

The Liverpool legend officially starts work at Ibrox on June 1, but he’s already been busy identifying targets and spent a chunk of the past week with new assistant manager Gary Mcallister in Dubai.

There’s certain to be a mass players’ exodus this summer, with Gerrard wanting to put his own stamp on the team. And Morelos has already attracted interest from Turkey.

The 21-year-old Colombian netted 18 goals in his first season in Glasgow. That attracted attention from Chinese clubs, with figures of up to £10m being quoted.

But his value has dropped significantly after he netted just once in his last 10 games and had a series of nightmare misses against Celtic.

Now reports in Turkey have revealed Istanbul giants Besiktas have watched Morelos, and are close to making a move. Manager Senol Gunes has identified new strikers as a priority after a disappointing campaign, which sees them currently sitting in fourth spot. But they want to sign Morelos on a year-long loan – with a view to signing him permanently if he impresses – rather than a permanent move.

And Gerrard would also have to sanction a move to sell the former HJK Helsinki ace.

Meanwhile, team-mate Eduardo Herrera is already back in Mexico where he is wanted by Chivas.

Ibrox flop Pedro Caixinha splashed out £1.5m to land the 29-year-old last summer, but he managed to score just twice in 24 appearances, the vast majority of those were from their bench.

He hasn’t played a single minute since the last 14 minutes of the Scottish Cup win at Ayr United in February.

The nine-times capped Mexican international still has two years left of his deal, but Rangers would be willing to let him leave for a modest fee or on loan. The Guadalajara club want him for the second part of the Mexican season which starts next month.
