United stars lacked impetus

- By Adam Lanigan sport@sundaypost.com

DAVID DE GEA (6)

United’s Player of the Year made one early save, had no chance with the pen and was then a spectator.

ANTONIO VALENCIA (6)

The captain was far more threatening when he got forward in the second half.

CHRIS SMALLING (6)

Deemed not good enough for England but did a solid job against Giroud.

PHIL JONES (5)

Won’t want to watch his part in Chelsea’s goal anytime soon. ( JUAN MATA, 87, 3)

ASHLEY YOUNG (6)

Converted from winger to full-back under Jose Mourinho, and one of United’s main forward threats but not enough consistency with his final ball.

ANDER HERRERA (6)

The match-winner in the semi-final was occupied with keeping a close eye on Hazard. Little was seen him of in a forward capacity.

NEMANJA MATIC (7)

Player with the absolute trust of his manager, he made a couple of good early tackles and was his reliable self.

JESSE LINGARD (5)

Midfielder has enjoyed a break-out season but not enough was seen of his surging forward runs. (ANTHONY MARTIAL, 73, 5. Brought impetus to the attack when he came on.)

PAUL POGBA (6)

The Frenchman wasn’t at the centre of things and missed a great chance to equalise.

ALEXIS SANCHEZ (6)

Began wide on the left but shifted inside to get more involved but couldn’t make a decisive contribution.

MARCUS RASHFORD: (5)

Given the main striker’s role with Romelu Lukaku not fit enough to start, he struggled to shine though came close to an equaliser. (ROMELU LUKAKU, 73, 4. A shadow of his usual self )

UNUSED – Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian, Scott Mctominay, Eric Bailly.
