Windsors were a right royal laugh

▼ THE WINDSORS ROYAL WEDDING SPECIAL (CHANNEL 4)

The real royal wedding was a spectacle, historic and a happy occasion.

But it wasn’t nearly half as much fun as The Windsors Royal Wedding Special.

This one-off episode brought back all the characters from the TV series.

It was a hoot to see Pippa Middleton portrayed as an absolute schemer and a bit of a floozie, Prince William as endearingly thick and Prince Harry as the wild boy whose stag do went a bit too far. (He woke up in jail in a Nazi uniform.)

Harry Enfield was fabulous as Prince Charles. But the real scene-stealers were Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Beatrice taking Jeremy Corbyn to the wedding as her date was my favourite moment.

Wouldn’t you love to know if the real Windsors had been gathered around the telly on Tuesday night?

It would surely have been a little light relief for them! I suppose you could argue that the whole hour was disrespectful to the royals. But it was all done in such a light-hearted and affectionate way that it’s hard to imagine even the most ardent of royalists being too bothered. And chances are they wouldn’t have been watching in the first place – unless, of course, they thought it was a documentary!

▼ CORONATION STREET (STV)

I am one of those shouting loudest when everyone complains that Corrie has become too serious.

And I still stand by that. But the episodes of the last couple of weeks, since Aidan took his own life, have been so well acted and moving that they’re worth a mention. Richard Hawley’s performance as Aidan’s grieving father, Johnny, has been outstanding.
