Comeback tennis star A n d y Mu r r a y w a s m o r e interested in talking about the World Cup than his Wimbledon return yesterday.

H e j o k i n g l y s u g g e s t e d abandoning a press conference in favour of watching one of the best games of the tournament instead.

Sir Andy was talking to journalists during France v Argentina, and as a succession of goals were scored that ended 4- 3 to France, he quizzed his audience on the score.

He said: “I can’t believe I’m m i s s i n g t h i s m a t c h” b e f o re suggesting “shall we just go and ...”, after discovering that France had scored for a fourth time.

The star, who supports Hibs, is no stranger to the beautiful game with his grandfather Roy Erskine playing on the Hibs juniors team before j o i n i n g St i r l i n g A l b i o n a s a professional.

The two- time Wimbledon singles champion was speaking ahead of his first round match against Frenchman Benoit Paire next week. Andy has been trying to work his way back to full fitness after undergoing hip surgery in January. He has been unable to play competitively in nearly a year, with his ranking falling to 156th in the world.

Doubts are still lingering over whether he will definitely play on Tuesday, with Andy saying he was taking his recovery ‘ day by day’. He said: “Unless in the next couple of days I wake up and don’t feel good ( I’ll play). Through all of this, I have to view it very much day by day, just as a process.

“I’m practising a high level, a high intensity, every day with some of the best players in the world. That’s really positive for me as part of getting better, to compete again.

“I’m just trying to right now keep building, practising with these guys, then hopefully pulling up each day and obviously competing in the matches, which went well I think the last couple of weeks, in Queen’s and Eastbourne. So far here that’s also been the case, which is good.”

Cromlix Hotel, which is owned by the star, has launched a dessert dubbed the Mu r ra y Mound in celebration.
