It’s a Muguruza repeat for me – but

Flip a coin, draw lots, ask a fortune teller. These methods are just as likely to come up with an accurate prediction of this Women’s champion as I am.

I am in the dark this time round. I can see as many as a dozen possible winners – but none of them are in sharp focus.

It’s a little bit like last year. Take Serena Williams out of the mix and there’s no clear favourite.

Of course, there is a difference this year. Serena is back in action – assuming the muscle injury that caused her to withdraw from the quarter-final in Paris has healed. That is what makes this such a fascinatingly open draw. There are so many factors to take into consideration.

Will Serena be fit enough to play? Will she be able to maintain that fitness through seven matches? What will be the effect of her being seeded 25?

How will French Open Champion Simona Halep react to winning her first Grand Slam title?

Can two-timewimbledon winner Petra Kvitova resurrect what is the most natural and formidable grass court game among the women?

Is Karolina Pliskova going to conquer the nerves that seem to affect her Grand Slam performances? When is the ‘real’ Sloane Stephens going to turn up at Wimbledon?

Any of them could win the title this year – and you can add Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Ostapenko and Venuswilliams to the list of potential champions.

But having considered all the facts – and consulted the star signs and tea leaves – I’m going to play it very safe and nominate the holder, Garbine Muguruza, as my choice to win the title.

It’s not as if Muguruza is head and shoulders above the rest.

But the Spanish star showed last year that she has an excellent grasscourt game, and as a double Grand Slam champion I believe she will not let nerves affect her performance. She’s a class act.

She makes the most of her sixfoot frame to serve powerfully, and she covers the court so well. Some players are not comfortable on grass, but she looks a natural.

I have also picked the Spaniard because of the question marks hanging over Serena.

In Paris, she improved with every match until the muscle injury forced her out, and into PR mode.
