Restaurant REVIEW 7 AMBIENCE 9 TOILETS

KNOWES HOTEL, MARKET STREET, MACDUFF

-

1 LOCATION

On a hill with fab views over Banffshire’s Dolphin Coast – so keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, porpoises and even the occasional whale.

2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Stylish and chic but with a welcome so warm you’ll feel right at home. This place underwent a major revamp thanks to the vision shared by its new owners.

3 SERVICE

First class. Our slick and friendly young waiter Liam was ultra-attentive without being obtrusive and was very knowledgeable.

4 MENU

Imaginative, varied and oozing quality and taste thanks to award-winning chef and owner Wayne.

5 TASTE

Off-the-scale delicious! My companion opted for the chef’s own concoction of Cullen Skink Risotto and voted it the tastiest starter ever. I had Oriental Spring Rolls. While my guest indulged her passion for Three Cheese Macaroni Au Gratin (which she loved), I chose Thai Green Curry for my main. The meat was succulent and tender with just enough chilli to give it the desired kick. Served with naans, mango chutney and basmati rice, it was so plentiful I struggled to finish. For dessert my companion chose a Warm Chocolate Tart with Orange and Cardamon Ice Cream. I tried for the equally scrumptious Sticky Toffee pudding.

6 PRICE

Starters ranged from £4.95 to £6.95, while mains started at £10.95 with the most expensive dish – an eight ounce fillet steak – coming in at £27.95. Our total bill, with drinks, was – given the fine quality – a very reasonable £52.70. Wonderful. The Knowes has a crisp modern décor in hues of heather, sage green and grey with sumptuous soft furnishings.

8 SOMETHING SPECIAL

Despite its chic persona, this is a restaurant for the whole family with children made especially welcome. It is also disabled-friendly.

Smart, clean and comfortable.

10 VERDICT

A super dining experience; but it’s extremely popular so book in advance. 18/20
