Calls to save charity for abused men
Campaigners are urging the Government to fund the only charity to provide support to battered men following a Sunday Post investigation. They say it would be a disaster if Men Abused In Scotland were to close next week because it can no longer afford the £130,000 annual running costs. Monica Lennon, Scottish Labour’s communities and equalities spokesperson, has called on the Government to intervene after we revealed almost one in five domestic abuse victims were men, rising to almost one in three for over-60s.
Experts say 91% of male victims never tell anyone.
The Labour MSP said: “Charities trusted by survivors of domestic abuse can make the difference between life and death.
“The perpetrators of domestic abuse are predominantly men, but men are victims too.
“There is an undeniable need for a dedicated service for male survivors.”
Some of the victims said they suffered knife injuries, and were in such fear from violent partners they slept in their car.
One, financial expert Colin, 48, from Lanarkshire, had his nose rebuilt after a vicious attacks by his enraged wife.
He said: “Without the support of AMIS, victims will die.
“This is the only place we can turn to.
“Without it, I don’t know where we will go.”
