YEE HONG, 5-8 KEMP ST, HAMILTON

-

1 LOCATION, LOCATION

Conveniently located just across from Hamilton Central train and bus station.

2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Yee Hong is a firm favourite in Hamilton. As well as doing a roaring trade on takeaways, it’s also a lovely place to go for a sit-down meal. The décor is understated with Chinese lanterns, fish tank and cherry blossom decals. It’s bright, comfortable and relaxed.

3 SERVICE

First-rate. We were seated straight away and polite, friendly servers were quick to take our order and checked on us regularly throughout.

4 MENU

Yee Hong has a huge and varied menu of authentic Cantonese dishes that boasts the usual favourites such as crispy chilli beef and lots of unique dishes, including amber fire steak with Schezuan seasoning. Expect generous portions.

5 TASTE

We treated ourselves to crispy aromatic duck which our server shredded for us at the table. The duck was delicious, tender and crispy. The kung po beef was lovely and tender, not too sweet and served with lots of fresh vegetables. We also went for salt and chilli king prawns. The prawns were huge and juicy, tasted wonderful and the batter was light and crispy. The only fault was that it was just a little too salty for our preference.

6 PRICE

Main courses and additional sides of rice aren’t the cheapest but you pay for quality, and the pre-theatre menu is a great deal.

7 AMBIANCE

Lovely and relaxed although they have a habit of playing the one album all the way through. There’s only so much Leona Lewis I can take in one sitting!

8 SOMETHING SPECIAL

Presentation – the rice is served in traditional wooden containers and served out by staff. Receiving some free melon and fortune cookies at the end was a nice surprise.

9 TOILETS

Clean and tidy.

10 VERDICT

Delicious food served and presented in style. 17/20
