The Sunday Post (Inverness)

THE WATERSIDE, 31 WATERSIDE ST

-

1 Location

In the heart of the picturesque village of Strathaven, with lovely views of the adjacent park and it’s right by the river, hence the name.

2 First impressions

Large and light inside with fresh, modern decor and lots of great outdoor seating. There are comfy booths dotted around the restaurant and bar, ideal for sinking into, cocktail in hand.

3 service

Our server was very polite and attentive, happy to chat but made sure we were served promptly.

4 menu

A good balance of fancy dishes and quality pub grub with an exciting set menu option that changes regularly. There’s also a great range of soft drinks and smoothies, making it ideal for designated drivers.

5 taste

The chefs clearly pride themselves on presentation – each dish is beautiful. We enjoyed red pepper humous on crispy toasted crostini topped with pretty, purple micro herbs and tasty grilled halloumi fries served with a zingy tomato chutney. The lamb chops with fresh veg and mustard sauce were absolutely delicious. The garlic and thyme marinated chicken leg was packed with flavour. The strawberry and vanilla cheesecake tasted phenomenal.

6 price

The main menu is a little pricey so it’s great they offer a set menu (two courses for £13.95, three for £17.95) and two for one pizza during the week, which look delicious.

7 ambiance

The warm, friendly service and popularity of the Waterside makes for a lovely atmosphere.

8 something special

Hard to pick one thing. The food, presentation, service and atmosphere combine to make this a very special place in Strathaven.

9 toilets

Clean, with a modern decor, like the rest of the place. And the toilets are so fancy, they flush automatically when you leave the cubicle!

10

verdict

A brilliant place for any occasion in a truly beautiful setting, and the food is excellent. Worth travelling to from further afield. 18/20
