This fourth film in the blockbusti­ng series is an absolute joy, delivering adrenaline-pumping thrills and smart one-liners.

Ten winters have passed since simian flu ravaged the globe. One-time military man Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) leads a band of survivors. In a forest, they encounters apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), including his ambitious second-incommand Koba.

Feisty single mother Clara Webb (Gemma Arterton) arrives in a rundown seaside resort with her daughter Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan).

To make ends meet, Clara sells her body, earning just enough to keep the pair off the streets. Every now and then, she sinks her teeth into a punter and we discover Clara is a vampire.

Director Guillermo del Toro’s film is a visually opulent gothic romance set in 19th Century New York and snow-laden Cumbria.

Ten-year-old Edith Cushing (Sofia Wells) loses her mother to black cholera. The matriarch’s soul (Doug Jones) visits Edith to deliver a chilling warning: “Beware of Crimson Peak”.

London solicitor Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe)r is dispatched to the remote village of Crythin Gifford.

The locals try to warn him off, and it isn’t long before he glimpses a mysterious figure (Liz White), who is blamed for the deaths of children in the village.
