the hosts. Warriors stemmed the immediate tide, but they couldn’t halt James Cronin as he was driven over following a penalty lineout. JJ Hanrahan added the simple conversion. There was a blow for the visitors when Sam Johnson was forced off with a shoulder problem.

On came late call-up Stafford Mcdowall and, within seconds, they created a brilliant try.

Slick handling from inside their 22-zone created the time and space for George Horne to scuttle in from 50 metres.

Brother Pete Horne pulled the wide-angled conversion wide of the near post – then missed a penalty opportunity.

But George burst back into the spotlight to finish clinically again after a break by Nick Grigg – setting up an easy kick for Pete.

Ruaridh Jackson thought he had snatched a third Warriors try five minutes after the restart – but video ref Brian Mcniece ruled he had lost control of the ball on the line. However, they kept up the momentum with Matt Fagerson ploughing over after a fractured scrum.

Munster’s response was fierce and only a superb lastditch tackle by George Horne prevented Hanrahan from scoring – though he quickly chipped over a penalty to repair some of the damage. Back came Glasgow to set up another great try, Pete Horne latching on to a perfectlyweighted lob from sibling George.

Pete Horne’s conversion stretched the margin to 14 after an hour.

Predictably, Munster upped the pace and Alex Wootton sneaked over in the corner to give them hope.

The tension level mounted when Alby Mathewson pounced for another, goaled by Ian Keatley.

Then came Scannell’s sickener 12 seconds from time.

Despite the loss, boss Dave Rennie hailed his Glasgow nearly men.

He said: “I can’t praise them highly enough for their commitment and guts.

“We were without a lot of our main players, and yet we went toe to toe with one of the most powerful teams in Europe.”
