The Sunday Post (Inverness)

how they played

-

STUART HOGG (6 out of 10) – Only lasted 17 minutes before going off with a shoulder injury but had looked his usual lively self.

TOMMY SEYMOUR (6) – Culpable at Ireland’s first try and they sensed a weakness on his flank, constantly probing.

HUW JONES (6) – Has carried his flat form at Glasgow into the international arena.

SAM JOHNSON (8) – Not as sparkling a show as last week’s debut but still impressive and a deserved first Test try.

SEAN MAITLAND (5) – Did some things quite well but did more things badly. Is far better than this display.

GREIG LAIDLAW (6) – Grew increasingly frustrated with the referee allowing Ireland to slow our ball down at the breakdown.

FINN RUSSELL (7) – Looked lively in the first half when he controlled the game but like his team-mates faded in the second 40.

ALLAN DELL (6) – Tackled his heart out, went well enough in the scrum against a heavier pack.

STUART MCINALLY (7) – Another tackling machine and carried well but wasn’t happy at losing two lineouts in key areas.

SIMON BERGHAN (5) – Fairly anonymous apart from when he was pinged for collapsing a scrum. Showed what a loss WP Nel is.

GRANT GILCHRIST (6) – Tackle after tackle but would have wanted a better return against an understrength Irish lineout.

JOHNNY GRAY (4) – Made 25 tackles but this was his worst game in Dark Blue by a distance.

RYAN WILSON (7) – Was his usual abrasive self in the first half, Scotland missed his influence as he was kept in at half-time with a knee injury.

JAMIE RITCHIE (7) – Has a huge appetite for the grunt work needed at this level and looks increasingly at home. Faster than you’d think, too.

JOSH STRAUSS (7) – Big hits and big carries aplenty but ran out of steam in the second half and lost possession twice at the ruck.

REPLACEMENTS FRASER BROWN (6) – Didn’t do anything wrong but needs game time.

JAMIE BHATTI (6) – The same could be said for Brown’s Glasgow team-mate.

D’ARCYRAE(6)– Not the result he’d want for his debut but made two tackles.

ROB HARLEY (6) – Came on while Ritchie was being stitched up, stayed on for Wilson and battled bravely. ALI PRICE (6) – No time to impress. PETER HORNE (6) – Tried to add his “weight” to a ruck – bounced off.

BLAIR KINGHORN (7) – Got more than an hour thanks to Hogg’s injury and did more than the two wingers that started combined.
