Hero Williams hails spirit at battling Accies

- By Ian Steven sport@sundaypost.com

“It’s about everybody,” was the rallying cry from Hamilton goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams as the Welsh player paid testament to the spirit within the Accies squad that inspired Brian Rice’s men to battle back to claim a point against Hibernian.

The former Inverness stopper was eager to explain the philosophy at the club that allowed Accies to fight back against both sides of the Edinburgh divide this season, despite being overwhelmed in terms of playing budgets.

“We have shown time and time this season that we are more than happy rolling our sleeves up and giving it a good fight, and try to get something from the game,” he said. “Which is what we had to do, today. I have to give credit to the lads for sticking in there. It is so easy to go the other way. Especially when you concede in the first half.

“Credit to all the boys for all the hard work and getting behind the ball, and making it difficult for Hibs.

“It was an important point at the end of the day.

“There is a spirit in the dressing room, regardless of the lads who are playing, whether it is the lads that come in, or whatever. It’s not just about them. It’s about everybody.

“It’s about the players that maybe are injured, the ones that are not selected, whatever, it is about everybody.

“I t ’s not just the players, it is about everybody who works at this football club.

“That is what we are trying to do here. And it is a reflection on the pitch.

“It is hard work. It is everybody sticking together and buying into what we are trying to do.

“Being a footballer, or in any walk of life, really, if you have the work ethic, if you have that trust and bond between the people you work with, you can really do something as a team.

“It is the togetherness at the end of the day. We have definitely got that in this football team.”

Wi l l i a m s admitted he had to be sharp in injury time to parry a Florian Kamberi strike that was destined for the top corner, which would have been harsh on a side still nestling in the danger zone at the foot of the league table, scrabbling for any points they can muster.

“I was speaking to the lads after the game in terms of my goalkeeping throughout the day, it was fairly quiet.

“When you consider it was quite an open game from both sides. Hibs got a chance very late in the game and I have to be switched on to do that. “Credit to everyone. I think we definitely deserved something out of the game. A vital point.”
