Scotland the best
Scotland is beautiful, and there are many roads and tracks that are perfect for taking in the views
Torridon
Easiest from the A896 between Kinlochewe and Torridon with views along the route of the three mighty Torridon mountains Beinn Eighe, Liathach and Beinn Alligin. The single-track road from Torridon village to Diabaig is probably the scenic pinnacle. Stop at a bench halfway round and at Gille Brighde, the café on the front at Diabaig when you get there. There is much to climb and clamber over here, or merely be amazed.
The Islands of Fleet
An enchanting coastal track through the hut village of Carrick which is not even on the map. Off A75 by Gatehouse of Fleet, signed for Cream o’ Galloway, then to Sandgreen (6km from main road). 200m before Sandgreen and its beach. Take the track towards the sea at a corner. Follow this round the hidden coves, headlands, dunes and the shacks always looking out to the islets in Fleet Bay. Magic swimming and picnicking, and great views.
Braemar–linn Of Dee
The A93 from Ballater to Braemar is beautiful, and there’s 12km of renowned Highland river scenery along the upper valley of the Royal Dee. The Linn is at the end of the road and the mighty Dee is squeezed until it is no more than 1m wide, but there are river walks and the start of the great Glen Tilt walk to Blair Atholl. The Deeside road here is fit for a queen and all.
Duke’s Pass, Aberfoyle-brig o’turk
Of the many roads through the Trossachs, this one is spectacular, though can get busy. There are numerous possibilities for stopping, exploration and great views. Good viewpoint 4km from Loch Achray Hotel, above road and lay-by. One-way forest road goes round Lochs Achray, Drunkie and Venachar. Good hillwalking starts and Loch Katrine. Aberfoyle, Callander and Brig o’turk for refreshments.
