I am bothered with phlegm that makes me feel sick. I am 81 and saw my husband, a heavy smoker, suffer with phlegm before he died from COPD. Could I have it too?
COPD is a long-term lung condition where there is obstruction of the airways due to damage most often caused by smoking. Other possible causes include passive smoking and air pollution.
In early stages, symptoms may seem like a smoker’s cough with phlegm. Other symptoms are increased breathlessness and more frequent chest infections (known as exacerbations). COPD is diagnosed using a test known as spirometry. It assesses how well your lungs work by measuring how much air you can blow out after a deep breath, and how quickly. The disease is irreversible but can be managed. The best treatment is to stop smoking to prevent further damage. Other treatments include mucolytics to tackle the sputum, inhalers, steroids and, where appropriate, antibiotics.
If you think you have COPD go back to your doctor and share your concerns. Your GP will decide whether you should be tested.
Over the last few days I have had a flashing light over my left eye which only lasts for a fraction of a second. What could this be?
Flashes across the visual field are common and not usually serious, but it would be a good idea to see your optometrist for a check-up. However, if the flashes suddenly appear or increase, they can be a warning sign of eye trouble. If linked to blurred vision, pain in the eye or a dark shadow moving across the vision like a curtain, you should see an optometrist urgently, to rule out retinal detachment. NHS 24 will be able to help.
I have a pea-sized lump where my neck meets my collarbone and moves around when I touch it. It has been there for several months without change. Should I see my GP?
It is always a good idea to check with your GP if you develop any kind of lump that doesn’t go away. Having said that, a lump being mobile and having not changed for several months would usually be signs it is likely to be benign.
