Scots welcome Royal backing after Kate hails the midwives
Midwives in Scotland welcomed some Royal support yesterday after the Duchess of Cambridge praised their compassion and dedication.
Kate, a mother of three, penned an open letter to the nation’s midwives after spending two days on a work placement at a maternity unit in London. She wrote: “You don’t ask for praise or for recognition but instead unwaveringly continue your amazing work bringing new life into our world.
“You continue to demonstrate that despite your technical mastery and the advancement of modern medicine, it is the human-to-human relationships and simple acts of kindness that sometimes mean the most.” Yesterday Dr Mary Ross-davie, director for Scotland at the Royal College of Midwives, said the Duchess’s words were “very heartening” for frontline staff.
She said: “It’s really positive, especially at this time of year when midwives have given up time being with their own families to look after women and their families. Midwives will often say that they don’t do it for the praise or the cards or accolades. “We do it really to give women and families the best possible start and the best experience through that journey, which can be quite frightening and bumpy.
“I think it is always really nice when midwives do get recognition and praise..
“I like the fact that Catherine talks about technical mastery but also human relationships and that sometimes simple acts of kindness mean the most. For me that really sums up the role of the midwife.”
