It looks like it’s Mellon for United

Dundee United hope to be able to unveil their new manager within the next 48 hours. The Tangerines, who identified Micky Mellon as their preferred candidate at the end of last week, have been working on finalising a deal.

Paisley-born Mellon is currently manager of Tranmere Rovers, who were relegated from England’s League One when their season was called. They have him under contract until next summer, but it is understood they will not stand in his way of a move to his home country’s top flight.

The 48-year-old hasn’t managed in Scotland, but has plenty of experience in England, where he has also managed Fleetwood Town, Barnsley (as caretaker) and Shrewsbury Town.

United’s Sporting Director Tony Asghar, who knows Mellon from his own time working south of the border, has already shown he is confident the switch to the Scottish game would not be a problem for the successful candidate. Former England manager Steve Mcclaren was the first choice to replace the departed Robbie Neilson until he turned down the opportunity. SFA Performance Director Malky Mackay and ex-united captain Jon Daly have also had talks. Meanwhile former United boss, Craig Levein, is mulling over a possible move abroad after leaving Hearts.

He left his role as Director of Football at the end of May.

The 55-year-old said: “I’ve spoken to a number of clubs, all of them abroad actually.

“There’s things moving a little bit quicker in some other countries than they are here. “I’m going to see what pops up, and if there’s anything I feel gives me a decent chance of being successful then I’ll have a look at it.”
