West Germany won the World Cup Final in Rome with a 1-0 victory against Argentina. Andreas Brehme (above) converted a penalty after 85 minutes. Argentina had Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti sent off.
The game was one of the most ill-tempered and cynical Finals of all time. Italy beat Bobby Robson’s England 2-1 to take third place. Roberto Baggio and Toto Schillaci scored, with David Platt replying for England.
