99 YEARS AGO THIS week

A look back at how The Sunday Post reported the world through the years. This week July 10, 1921. Child killer caught with body in attic, Ireland calls truce in War of Independence and historic trial over alleged war crimes

It was just 17 days after 15-year-old Harold Jones had been found not guilty of murder when The Sunday Post went to press on July 10, 1921.

The paper reported: “Harold Jones the 15-yearold boy who was acquitted a fortnight ago of the charge of murdering a little girl at Abertillery, Monmouthshire, has been rearrested on another murder charge. The victim is Flora Little, a girl of 11.

Her body was found in attic in Jones’ house.

“Jones joined the search party that scoured the countryside in search of the girl, and suggested that bloodhounds should be put on the murderer’s track. The police had difficulty in restraining the crowd when the news of the boy’s arrest leaked out. Threats to lynch him were made.

The story continued: “The town was thrilled by a startling sequel to the murder of a nine-year-old

schoolgirl Freda Burnell. Today he is again in custody on the charge of murder, the body of another child, Little, aged 11, having been found in the attic of the house where lives. Her throat was cut. The crowd surrounded the police station, but were outwitted and Harold Jones had been conveyed away in a motor car to Usk Prison.”

Jones was later found guilty of murdering Little and confessed to the killing of Burnell at trial.
