Benrahma at the double for rampant Bees

- By Benjamin Thomas sport@sundaypost.com

Brentford booked their place in the playoffs with a 3-1 victory at Derby, with Said Benrahma shining again. The Algerian frontman took his tally to seven goals following football’s resumption last month, scoring twice as the Bees racked up a seventh straight win.

Ollie Watkins scored his 24th of the season to give the visitors an early lead, but Derby levelled through Jason Knight, only for a Ben Hamer howler to change the game.

The Rams keeper should have saved Benrahma’s low drive early in the second half, but allowed it to go under him and the winger sealed victory with his second in the 64th minute – a shot from the edge of the box. Brentford head coach Thomas Frank said: “We are in a very good place and we just need to continue. I am spoiled with good players that it is a privilege to coach and be around.”

Lee Bowyer hit out at refereeing decisions that leave “careers on the line” after Charlton’s 1-0 loss to Reading. Addicks boss Bowyer criticised referee Darren Bond and his assistants for disallowing Chuks Aneke’s goal for offside and denying Jake Forster-caskey a late penalty.

George Puscas’ thirdminute spot-kick proved enough for Reading’s second win in three matches.

The Addicks’ third straight loss leaves Bowyer’s men embroiled in a relegation dogfight, with just three games to play.

“The officials have cost us the game today, it’s plain and simple,” said Bowyer. “Something has to be done, because that wasn’t up to scratch, all of them, the ref and the two linesmen.”

Ry a n Leonard’s second-minute stunner sealed play-off hopefuls Millwall a 1-0 victory at beleaguered Hull. Grant Mccann’s Tigers have endured a torrid 2020, with a playoff push replaced by a relegation battle. Nahki Wells scored his 20th goal of the season to keep Bristol City on the fringes of the play-off race and leave Middlesbrough scrapping for dear life. Wells helped himself to a double either side of Jamie Paterson’s fine finish as the visitors, under the guidance of caretaker manager Dean Holden, cruised to a 3-1 win at the Riverside Stadium.

A 0-0 draw at Oakwell kept Barnsley at the foot of the table on paper and Wigan effectively bottom once their 12-point penalty is applied. Dominic Iorfa, Josh Windass and Jacob Murphy all scored as Sheffield Wednesday won 3-0 at QPR.
