Choose a cosy, colourful or classy interior

How selecting the right flooring can transform your interior space

-

When redecorating and refurbishing, it is common to have wall colours picked out, measurements taken for furniture and artwork ordered before we even take time to consider the flooring. But, since flooring is underfoot and takes up a significant amount of space in every room, it has a major impact on the aesthetic of any home.

Upon walking into a room, subconsciously the flooring can affect the impression we have of a space. The right floor can make your interior space look instantly cooler, warmer, larger or cosy and more intimate.

Using contrasting colours in your flooring creates structure and gives the illusion of different levels in a room with few items of furniture.

Take your hallway or lobby, for example. A space that has little in it other than a coat stand or shoe rack could greatly benefit from the impact of a geometric floor pattern with contrasting colours. An ornate pattern or vibrant colours in your entrance way can make your home instantly more appealing and welcoming to visitors, and can even add value.

Wooden floors can add class and sophistication to a room. Although more common in dining and sitting areas, consider implementing a wooden floor in your bedroom for true elegance and style.

Choose a darker shade of wood and pair with bohemian rugs and wall hangings for relaxed rustic charm. Lighter wood is perfect in hallways to brighten up the area and give the illusion of more space.

When it comes to softer floorings, carpets are a great way of controlling a room’s acoustics.

Take a home office, for example: a plush carpet can prevent echoes and muffle surrounding sounds to create a calmer, more comfortable working environment. They are also great in family rooms or snugs – layer with sheepskin rugs and beanbags to achieve ultimate cosiness.
