Do folk think the virus takes Christmas off?

£25 STAR LETTER

-

I had to drop my mum off for a medical appointment a few days before Christmas and waited in a carpark next to a garden centre. The carpark was pretty much full and I couldn’t believe how busy its cafe was.

From where I was sitting it looked full and if the tables were socially distanced I couldn’t see it. Most off the customers looked over 60 and many seemed to be meeting their pals.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. Who do they think gets Covid? Did they think it was taking Christmas off? It’s no wonder cases are going through the roof. The vaccines can’t get here soon enough.

Our key workers

Sixty years ago I did a paper round covering for sickness. The newsagent would write each address at the top of the page and it would take me ages to read his writing. Life is much simpler today as each round has a computer printout. Best wishes for 2021 to the boys, girls, men and women who deliver the papers in all weathers.

If not now, when?

Nicola Sturgeon insists the coming months isn’t the time to hold an inquiry into care home deaths in Scotland – tragically significantly higher in percentage terms than in England.

Will a date after next May’s election be more preferable, I wonder?

Looking for a Bible

I am looking to track down our Wharrie Family Bible. My Uncle Willie stayed in South Queensferry. He died in 1980. His wife, my Aunt Ella, had a niece, Gina Long. If anyone can assist, please email pat18@uwclub.net Gordon Wharrie, Cheltenham

Puzzlingly perfect

Just finished reading this week’s paper. The Sunday Post is a must. Plenty of reading, and puzzles which “do ma heid in” when I can’t get them! Brian Sinclair, Peterhead

Enjoy the wee cough

I was walking around the park and kept having to move into the verge to avoid families walking three and four abreast and dog walkers stopping for a chat. I was like the walking definition of Giles Brandreth’s word of the year. I had turned into a “coughing dodger”. Mrs T Pearson, by email

Thank you, Francis

Francis Gay’s articles are wonderful. I have one in my wallet that will always be with me. I recently lost my husband, he died very suddenly.

The article I was referring to said this: “As long as my heart holds memories, as long as my eyes have tears, I will treasure the time I spent with you. Those were our special years.”

I was married for 26 happy years so perhaps you can see why it means so much to me.
