Kerr wasn’t surprised while Irvine is left ‘a bit sick’

Jason Kerr last night praised St Johnstone for the “best display I have ever seen” and revealed he and his team-mates have fancied themselves to win the League Cup all season long.

The 23-year-old defender netted his team’s first in their surprise 3-0 win over Hibs and was a key part of the team’s defensive shut-out.

Thanks to their collective efforts, they can now look forward to a final against whoever comes out on top today’s second semi-final between Livingston and St Mirren.

A victory in the final would deliver the club’s first-ever win in the competition.

“We have fancied ourselves for this all season,” Kerr said.

“St Mirren and Livingston are good sides and have put in good performances to get to this stage, so we are not going to take them lightly.

“But hopefully we can get a good performance in the final as well and win the Cup, because that’s all you want to do as a football player – deliver success.

“We won the Scottish Cup in 2014 and get plenty of reminders of that as we have the gaffer, Callum Davidson and Steven Maclean at the club.

“They know what it’s all about.

“We all knew how important this game was and that’s why we are buzzing about our performance.

“We rode our luck in the first half because Hibs were the better team by far and they created a lot of chances.

“But we scored at right time and went on to turn in an outstanding performance to get ourselves through.

“If I am honest I think it is the best display I have ever seen from a St Johnstone side.”

Hibs new signing, Jackson Irvine, though, was devastated by his side’s defeat.

“I feel a bit sick after that,” he said. “You don’t get many opportunities to play on occasions like this.

“We let it pass us by and it feels sickening. It wasn’t good enough all round.

“We had a number of big chances and at this level you will get punished if you miss them.

“When you don’t take those opportunities it comes back to bite you.”
