Fifers will look after themselves during big month
Dunfermline goalkeeper Owain Fon-williams was in positive mood in the wake of his side’s goalless draw with struggling Ayr United, the Welshman having kept a clean sheet as he helped withstand a second-half onslaught by the visitors.
“A clean sheet is the first thing you look for when you’re a goalkeeper” he said.
“It’s important to shut up shop – and that’s what we did today.
“From a defensive view, we were solid and didn’t give much away.
“I’m happy with that.
“They came at us in the second half and they were certainly a threat.
“They’ve got some good attacking players and they try to link up, something they do very well.”
Fon-williams saved superbly from Tom Walsh early in the second half, with the Ayr players claiming the ball had crossed the line, but the Pars keeper was having none of it.
“They’re obviously going to say that and we would do the same” was his response.
“However, I stopped the ball from going in.
“Apart from that, realistically they didn’t create a lot.
“They tried hard, but, from a defensive point of view, we did everything we could to prevent them creating scoring opportunities.”
The keeper acknowledged that the draw was a lost opportunity, bearing in mind Hearts defeat.
However, he made it clear that the important thing was what Dunfermline can achieve, especially in view of both the forthcoming meeting with the league leaders and Fife neighbours Raith.
“You could say its disappointing, but, I’ll be honest with you, we look after ourselves here and we’ll let the other teams do what they’re doing.
“We’ve got a lot to concentrate on – and we’ve got a big month ahead of us.”
