Beat the lockdown blues with a touch of glam and a perfect tan

- As told to Tracey Bryce

With the colder weather snap and another lockdown in force, it’s fair to say we’re all feeling a little blue just now.

But what better way to cheer yourself up than with a little splash of colour?

Tanning is a great way to make yourself look and feel glam, and a quick beauty fix to lift your mood for all those work calls on Teams or weekend Zoom nights in.

But what tan is best for you? Samantha Allen, CEO of Doll Beauty, says this is the first step in getting a gorgeous, natural looking glow.

The prep step

“There are so many options, from mist to lotion, oil to mousse. So, deciding what works best for your skin is imperative before you even start tanning.a lot of people choose mousse due to its light texture. It is also easy to see where the tan has been applied as opposed to a transparent mist where it doesn’t start showing up until it has developed,”said Samantha.

“Once you have decided which type of tan is best for you, it’s time to prep the skin.

“Regardless of the tan you use, the skin needs to be clean of dead skin and old fake tan.

“To prep correctly, we recommend a quality exfoliator – rich in moisture but also tough enough to do the job of removing your dead skin.

“Another alternative would be to use exfoliating gloves.

These are often so much easier to use and more comfortable. Add a blob of shower gel and scrub away.this should leave you perfectly polished and ready for the next step – moisturising.”

Time to tan

Moisturising is imperative to ensure the skin is as smooth as possible before you start applying tan.

“We’d recommend a thin layer of moisturiser all over the body then leave to dry for 15 minutes.take care at those naughty areas which can be more difficult than others to get a flawless application, such as ankles, feet and hands,” Samantha said.

Once your prep is over, it’s time to move on to tanning.

“There are many ways to apply the tan; some choose bare hands (risky!), some choose gloves and others choose a mitt.

Top tips

Applying two layers is key. First, apply one layer, leave todryfor15minutesbefore moving onto the second layer. We’d recommend tanning in front of a mirror.

Sleep in loose or baggy clothes to minimise the risk of transfer.

After letting your tan work it’s magic overnight, wash off with a gentle shower gel and pat down the skin.also don’t shave your legs or the tan will be removed.
