THE BIG QUESTIONS

-

Ardverikie House was used as a location in the Monarch Of The Glen TV series, but was it also Glendarroch House in Take The High Road? – M

Glendarroch House was actually Auchendennan Youth Hostel on Loch Lomond. Many exterior scenes were filmed in Luss, in Argyllshire. Ardverikie House has often graced our screens in movies such as Mrs Brown (1997) and 2011’s Salmon Fishing In Yemen and in TV shows including Outlander and The Crown.

When my grandson drew me a picture of a zorilla, I though he was making up a cross between a zebra and a gorilla. My daughter says it’s a real beast and he is infatuated by them as he’s heard they are the world’s smelliest animal. Really? – C

They are, so if he asks for one as a pet, get him a guinea pig instead! Zorillas, more correctly known as striped polecats, are African carnivores of the weasel family. With a black and white body, about 30-40cms long and a white, bushy tail about 20-30cms long, the zorilla can easily be mistaken for a skunk. However, they secrete a fluid when they feel endangered that smells worse than any skunk.

I’ve often wondered – why is a score in rugby called a try? – F

In the earliest days of rugby, according to the 1845 rules, the only points were scored came from kicks at goal, the kick being described as “a try at goal”. The kick had to be earned by first touching the ball down between the posts, and this became known as a “try”.

As the rules evolved, tries were eventually rewarded with five points, and two for the kick after.
