Josh Doig admits he was over the moon after scoring his first professional goal – but was just gutted the fans were not in the stadium to witness it.

The Hibs wing back sealed the points for Jack Ross’ side with a second half header to add to Martin Boyle’s first half strike in the 2-0 victory over 10-man Hamilton.

Doig was left with a simple header in the 70th minute after being set up by Boyle.

And the 18-year-old was thrilled to finally break his scoring duck.

He said: “I was just waiting for that goal.

“I was saying at half-time: ‘When is this goal going to come?’, and it sat up perfectly for me. I closed my eyes and just headed it.

“I just ran when I scored. I was absolutely over the moon and just screamed like a little girl. I was delighted.

“But what a feeling to get your first professional goal. There’s nothing better.

“There were no fans here and I’ve still not had the experience of playing with fans, which is madness!”

Hibs rode their luck during the early stages before the game turned in their favour in the 12th minute through Accies defender Jamie Hamilton’s red card.

The Leith side remain four points ahead of Aberdeen in third place with a game in hand.

Head coach Jack Ross said: “The players can smell an opportunity for success, which is great.

“Whenever we’ve had a bump this season, they’ve responded really well.

“That’s five out of six wins, four on the bounce and we’ve had a lot of clean sheets in that period.

“It’s testament to the players because they keep buying into what we’re doing and producing.

“A lot of good teams are vying for positions in this area of the table but we’re in a good place and the players are enjoying their football.”

Ross, meanwhile, admits he thought the decision to send off Hamilton was harsh.

He added: “I thought Jamie was a bit high and reckless with the tackle. But I was still surprised when he was sent off.

“I don’t think there was real malice in it but it probably didn’t look great.”
