THE BIG QUESTIONS

-

I know Italy’s Dino Zoff is the oldest player to win a World Cup Final, but who is the oldest player to score in a final? – G

Zoff was 40 years and 133 days old when he won the World Cup in 1982. The oldest scorer in a final was Sweden’s Nils Liedholm, who scored in their 5-2 defeat to Brazil in the 1958 final. He was 35 years and 264 days old. In the same game, Brazil’s Pele became the youngest scorer in a final, when he was just 17 years and 249 days old.

I don’t fish myself, but I do enjoy The Sunday Post’s angling column. In fact, reading about the fish being caught in Scotland’s fisheries made me wonder – what is the largest fish ever caught by a rod? – G

The largest ever caught by rod and line was a sturgeon, landed by Major C E Radclyffe in 1911 on the River Frome in Dorset. At 2.81 m (9ft 3in) long, it weighed in at 94kilos (207lb). However, that was a mere tiddler compared to the monster caught by angler Alfred Dean off the coast of Australia in 1959.

Taking just under an hour, he landed the fish, which weighed 1,208kg (2,664lb) and wasn’t just any old fish – it was a great white shark!

I’ve just bought a helmet for my son, who whizzes about on his skateboard at an alarming rate of knots. But what is the top speed of a skateboard rider? – J

The record for skateboarding in a standing position is held by Britain’s Peter Connolly at an astonishing 91.17mph. He set the record in Quebec, Canada in 2017 at L’ultime Descente, a gravity sports event for experts in skateboard, luge and in-line skates.
