THE BIG QUESTIONS

-

I know that Pele only played once on Scottish soil, a warm-up for the 1966 World Cup. How many of his team-mates won the cup in 1970? – T The match on June 25 at Hampden Park in front of 75,000 fans ended in a 1-1 draw, Stevie Chalmers opening the scoring for the hosts, Servilio equalising.

Only three players, Pele, Gerson and Jairzinho would go on to earn footballing immortality as part of Brazil’s 1970 World Cup-winning side.

What is the strangely-shaped building I see in the logo of the credits on re-runs of Frasier on Channel 4 every morning? – C

That is Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, which stands 184m (605ft) tall and offers 360 degree views of the city in Washington state.

It was built for the 1962 World’s Fair, when 20,000 visitors a day would use the elevators to reach the viewing platform. The elevators, travelling at 16kmh (10mph) take 43 seconds to reach the top. Approximately 1.3 million people visit the Space Needle every year, and the bravest can step out on to a revolving glass floor with views to the city, 152m (500ft) directly below.

On a walk along the coast this morning, I watched a big ship sail into the distance, over the horizon – so I’d like to know how far away the horizon is, please. – K That all depends on how tall you are, and how high up you are, due to the curvature of the earth. Assuming you are about 1.8m (6ft) tall, and standing at sea level, the horizon will be 5km (3miles) away. On top of a 100m (320ft) cliff, the horizon is 35km (21 miles) distant.
