City have set the bar for the season

-

Manchester City spent big to get Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for a fee in the region of £100 million.

It will now be interesting to see if they also land Harry Kane but it will take an even bigger offer to persuade Spurs to sell their main striker.

If they are successful in their pursuit, then it may well be that one or two players may have to leave the Etihad in order to help balance out the finances.

Most clubs will try and get as much business as they can over the line in the coming week, before the Premier League gets under way on Friday night.

Pep Guardiola’s champions are the team to beat, but Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea will also be in the mix to win the title.

For the Anfield club, the return

of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez is significant.

Both missed most of last season through injury but are now back in the fold and that is a real positive for Jurgen Klopp.

There is no doubt that the team suffered last season due to their absence.

But there is no point in looking back. It’s about moving forward.

Jurgen has also bolstered his defensive options by recruiting Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig for around £35m.

That’s important in what will be a testing campaign domestically and in Europe.

We’ll wait and see how every player settles in to their new club, and we will get a more accurate picture of how things are when the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

I’ll also be keeping an eye on how it goes for Rafa Benitez at Everton.

Rafa has a fantastic CV, and has won trophies at most of his clubs, including the Champions League with Liverpool.

He now has a new chapter in his career, and there will be focus on him from day one for obvious reasons.
