HOW THE SCOTS PLAYED

- By Brian Fowlie

FORMATION: 3-4-1-2

CRAIG GORDON (7)

One shot warmed his palms on the hour mark but otherwise had very little to do in his 59th full cap.

JACK HENDRY (7)

A steady performance. Was there with a couple of important headers during a time when Moldova had some pressure.

GRANT HANLEY (7)

Again showed he has become much more dependable at the heart of defence. At his best when he keeps it simple.

KIERAN TIERNEY (7)

An all-action outing. Should have scored with a header when unmarked at a corner.

NATHAN PATTERSON (8)

The right wing-back role suited him down to the ground. Fabulous pace and shows great composure for one still so inexperienced.

BILLY GILMOUR (8)

The manager doesn’t want Gilmour put under pressure, but the 20-year-old revelled in taking responsibility to create. Just needs to add goals. (KENNY MCLEAN 73, 5, tidy as usual.)

RYAN CHRISTIE (6)

Chased the ball a lot without making a huge impact. Never stopped looking to create openings.

ANDY ROBERTSON (7)

Delighted not to start on the right and bomb down the left side. Couple of chances but the Liverpool man isn’t a regular scorer. (LIAM COOPER 73, 6. On to give Robertson a break.)

JOHN MCGINN (7)

Drove forward from the start and is so influential in setting the tempo for Scotland. Not everything came off but he never stops battling. (CALLUM MCGREGOR, 65, 5. Energetic but not much influence.)

NATHAN DYKES (7)

Won’t get an easier chance to open the scoring. Was there to follow up and hit the net. (DAVID TURNBULL 85, 5).

KEVIN NISBET (7)

Good link-up with Patterson in the move that broke the deadlock. Could have scored a short time later if he’d been sharper. (CHE ADAMS, 65, 6, did his best to add a goal threat).

Unused subs — Kelly (Gk), Clark (Gk), Mckenna, Gallagher, Ferguson, Fraser, Clark.
