Pittodrie youngsters were simply spot on

ABERDEEN B 1 Ruth (75)

ARBROATH 1 Henderson (90) (Aberdeen won 4-1 on pens)

Aberdeen Colts earned another shot at Championship opposition in the next round, sealing a trip to play Hamilton Accies after prevailing over in-form Arbroath at Pittodrie on spot-kicks.

Arbroath had the first opening of the game on 22 minutes with an interchange of play finding Dylan Paterson whose flier from 25 yards sailed just over the bar.

Luke Donnelly tested Tom Ritchie for the visitors a minute later with an outstretched save denying the forward.

The young Dons grew in confidence as the first half wore on and Ryan Duncan did well to find Liam Harvey from the byline but the striker just failed to adjust his body in time from the cross.

Tyler Mykyta played through Kieran Ngwenya on the hour mark for Aberdeen with the youngster free in space towards goal but the left back fired just over the bar.

A couple of minutes later, the Pittodrie side came close again, After Ngwenya had been fouled just outside the box Jack Maciver forced Calum Antell to tip the curling free-kick over the bar.

Chances were in abundance afterwards with Arbroath pressing hard to get that elusive opener.

Former Don Nicky Low charged into the box before his smashed effort crashed off the post with Ritchie getting a hand to the ball.

Low then found Donnelly with the former Celtic striker heading over.

The hosts took the lead with quarter of an hour remaining after Mykyta played a lovely ball down the channel to Ngwenya. He found Michael Ruth in space and the Dons striker guided home from close range.

Arbroath equalised in the fourth minute of stoppage time through Liam Henderson who chipped the ball over the exposed Aberdeen backline to rescue the tie for Dick Campbell’s side.

In the ensuing penalty shootout Aberdeen converted all four spot-kicks with Mykyta, Ruth, Ryan Duncan and Kevin Hanratty all hitting the back of the net to ensure progress for the Dons after Tom Ritchie had saved efforts by Henderson and James Craigen.

PETERHEAD 0 EAST FIFE 1 Denholm (10)

East Fife scored the only goal after 10 minutes as a goalkeeping error cost the Blue Toon dear. Wilson came racing out of his area to challenge Semple. The forward got there first, lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper, and Denholm nodded home from close range.

The men from Methil should have been out of sight by half time as they missed a host of chances. Denholm was the main culprit as he fired two great chances wide and also clipped the post.

In the second half Mclean came closest for the hosts as he drew a great save out of Smith while Wilson was called into action at the other end to deny the impressive Semple.

INVERNESS CT 4 Jamieson (24), Harper (67), Mckay (81, 89)

BUCKIE THISTLE 0

Buckie Thistle started on the front foot, twice coming close to drawing first blood. Former Caley Thistle transfer target Kevin Fraser drew a save one-on-one with Cammy Mackay, before Andrew Macaskill found himself desperately unlucky to hit the crossbar with a curling effort that had Mackay beaten.

Inverness soon bit back. Aaron Doran played a floated ball over the Buckie defence to Anthony Mcdonald, but the winger had his shot well saved by Kevin Main.

And it was the home side who took the lead in 25 minutes when Doran curled in a free kick from the right, and Lewis Jamieson found space to head home into the top left corner.

Jamieson, making his first appearance for Inverness, was in confident mood and shortly after struck the crossbar with an audacious left foot effort from just outside the area

In the second half, Buckie keeper Kevin Main feebly pushed the ball away under pressure from Caley substitute Tom Walsh, and young left back Cameron Harper lifted the ball up and over him to make it 2-0.

Billy Mckay made it three when he somehow squeezed the ball home with a right foot shot from the angle.

Main got a glove to it but could only help it into the bottom right corner.

Mckay struck again to complete the rout, playing a 1-2 with Jamieson and bundling home over Main from inside the six-yard box.

MONTROSE 1 Webster (pen, 4)

STIRLING 0

Montrose got off to a fine start against their League Two opponents when Graham Webster slotted home a penalty in four minutes after Craig Johnston had been pushed in the box.

Despite the Gable Endies having the bulk of the pressure throughout the game it was Stirling who made the better openings during the first period with Daniel Scally and Kyle Banner all spurning chances before Webster headed over the bar for Montrose on the stroke of half-time.

The home side continued to press, although Stirling were still a danger with Dylan Bikey pulling a shot to the right before another Webster header was saved on 58 minutes and Chris Antoniazzi shot straight at the Stirling keeper just minutes later.
