Been there, Dunnet that! Head north and make a big splash at watersports centre

You can try your hand at watersports at many beaches, but if surfing’s your game, then the top destination has to be Dunnet Bay.

This magnificent 3.2km (2 miles) stretch of sand between Castletown and Dunnet is the site of the most northerly surf lessons in Scotland. Iona Mclachlan and Finn Mcdonald, both surfing champions, own and run North Coast Watersports, which offers surf and stand-up paddleboard lessons.

“Dunnet Beach is the perfect spot to learn these sports as it’s super safe, sheltered from the currents, and has consistent beginnerfriendly waves,” says Iona.

“It’s a beautiful sandy beach with very few rocks or dangers. Being located next to the most northerly headland on mainland Britain allows all the Atlantic swells to roll in here. On calm days it can also be an amazing place for paddleboarding with the impressive cliffs and many opportunities to spot wildlife such as otters, dolphins and even orcas!”

Iona, the Scottish ladies surfing champion, is from the north coast and knows these waters better than anyone. Her partner Finn is a former under-18 champion and coach. Both are trained lifeguards so you’ll be in safe hands when you take to the waves.

Iona’s younger brother Craig is a trainee coach at the school and the current Scottish men’s national champion. With such a pedigree, you’ll certainly be learning from the best.

Surf lessons can be provided as a group or a private session. The experienced coaches will adapt the lesson to your needs, whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking for some extra tuition.

Stand-up paddleboarding is a sport that has grown in popularity over the last few years and Dunnet Beach is the perfect place to give it a go. All equipment is provided, and you can choose from a 90-minute group or private lesson with any of the team.

“Our guests love the unique experience and being able to create unforgettable memories,” says Iona. “It’s a challenge in a fun and safe environment.

“We run our lessons at the best location, provide high quality equipment and use fully qualified, experienced coaches who want to help you fall in love with the sea and the north coast like we have. When it all comes together there’s no better feeling than flying over the water!”

In beautiful surroundings, Dunnet Bay really is the ideal location to take to the waves. The chance to learn a new skill – surfing, paddleboarding or both – with expert instruction and spectacular scenery is something you’ll never forget!
