Cove cruise but title bid goes to another week

-

COVE RANGERS 3 ALLOA 0

The script was written for Cove Rangers clinching their title success, but Airdrie’s late winner means the Aberdeen side still need one more win to claim the League 1 title.

The Wasps started better, with Stuart Mckenzie making a great save from Connor Sammon. The hosts began to settle into the occasion as the half wore on with captain Mitch Megginson and defender Morgyn Neill going close

Paul Hartley’s team upped their game after the break and the pressure paid dividends in 57 minutes when Fraser Fyvie glanced Harry Milne’s cross into the corner of the net. In 83 minutes, Fyvie made it 2-0, running on to a Connor Scully supply and beating keeper Peter Morrison with his low finish.

In 89 minutes, Milne rounded off the win with a header from a cross by sub Jamie Masson.

Victory over Dumbarton at home next week would see Cove crowned champions.

AIRDRIE 3 DUMBARTON 2

On the 24-minute mark, some fine play by Airdrie’s Scott Mcgill saw him move the ball in for Dylan Easton to fire the ball into the net beyond keeper Kieran Wright to break the deadlock.

With 27 minutes gone, it was 2-0 as Callum Gallagher blasted into an open goal after a backpass was intercepted.

Out of the blue, the game turned inside two-minute spell. In 39 minutes, George Stanger headed home to reduce the deficit, while Airdrie’s Adam Frizzell was red-carded in 41 minutes after a foul.

With 20 minutes to play, a cross into the box led to some uncertainty in the Airdrie box, with the ball striking Mccabe and ending up in the net for 2-2.

However, with a minute remaining, the Diamonds went back in front. Jordan Allan had an initial effort blocked, then Callum Smith bustled his way into the box and set up Jordan Allan to net the winner.

CLYDE 2 MONTROSE 1

Clyde found themselves behind early on when Michael Gardyne headed a Graham Webster cross firmly into the net.

The home side responded through an Aaron Splaine shot that was comfortably held by Allan Fleming, but the visiting keeper was beaten a minute later when Lewis Jamieson was on hand to tap home after Splaine’s effort hit the bar.

Clyde completed their recovery before the break when Mark Docherty jinked beyond a defender and crossed for Nick Mcallister to head over the line.

Gardyne almost gave Montrose a similar start to the second half as he did in the first, but his shot from distance sneaked wide.

Home keeper Neil Parry pulled off two fine diving saves in quick succession to deny Gardyne and Cammy Ballantine, then Blair Lyons sent a close-range header inches over at the death.

EAST FIFE 1 FALKIRK 3

East Fife will play League 2 football next season after this defeat to Falkirk confirmed their relegation.

On the 15-minute mark, the hosts went close again when Kyle Connell’s dipping shot pulled a smart save out of Robbie Mutch.

The action was all down one area of the park and Mutch again had to look smart to keep out another Connell shot.

Falkirk were offering next to nothing in an attacking sense and a Leigh Griffiths free-kick was easily dealt with by the home defence.

But they started to ease themselves into the game and forced the Fifers further back into their own half.

On 34 minutes, it was Falkirk who scored the opening goal when Callumn Morrison created space for himself inside the box and fired beyond Jude Smith.

East Fife tried to haul themselves level and Stewart Murdoch was unlucky with a header which dropped inches wide.

But their task was made all the more difficult when a counter-attack from the Bairns resulted in Charlie Telfer lashing a magnificent strike past Smith.

The Fifers pulled a goal back in the closing minutes when Jamie Semple netted from a penalty after Jack Healy was fouled.

However, Falkirk restored their two-goal lead in time-added through Morrison before referee Steven Reid’s full-time whistle opened the trapdoor on the Methil men.

PETERHEAD 2 QUEEN’S PARK 1

In a fast and furious first half at Balmoor, it was Peterhead who struck first on four minutes when a wonderful turn by Grant Savoury left the Queen’s defence for dead and his cutback from the byline was swept home by Ryan Duncan from just inside the 18-yard box.

The hectic pace continued for the remainder of the first half without any further scoring.

Peterhead started the second half just like the first and Savoury slotted home from close range after a fine run from Payne.

Queen’s pulled a goal back 15 minutes later through Simon Murray, but could not add to their tally, despite Peterhead being reduced to 10 men when Jason Brown was given a red card for violent conduct with 12 minutes to go.
