Cowie: We will not panic. Our focus is clear

Ross County caretaker boss Don Cowie refused to press the panic button after suffering his first home defeat in his 13th game in charge.

But Cowie warned: “While I have no issue with losing games of football, we have to make sure it doesn’t spiral out of control like it did today.

“We gifted them two goals in the first half, and we got punished for it. “The game was 2-1 with 10 minutes to go and, ultimately, Motherwell picked us off when we had to go for it.

“We have another massive game on Wednesday night, and we have to focus on that now.

“Nothing changes. We know that if we go to St Johnstone and win on Wednesday, we’re safe, so it’s pretty simple what our goal has to be.

“When you lose a game of football, you have to assume the worst will happen, but St Johnstone didn’t take advantage so we’ve been fortunate.

“It sets us up for a very important game. When I came into the role we were five points behind, and now, if we win on Wednesday, we’re safe, so we’ll take that.”

Cowie added: “We huffed and puffed a little bit, but with 10 minutes to go we are still well in the game and, with the way our home form has been, I expected us to go on and get the equaliser, but obviously it unravelled.

“We tried to force it, and our shape got dismantled, and when that happens good teams punish you. That’s what they did.”

Well boss Stuart Kettlewell recalled: “Our worst performance by a country mile since I came to the club as a manager was up here in a 3-0 defeat, and that was a sore one for me and the players, but I think today shows that we’ve turned a corner.

“The goals we’ve scored and the points we’ve picked up since then is really pleasing, but when you have that you see your supporters travelling in force.

“It feels like we’ve put that ghost to rest, and it was a really professional performance.

“We want to finish as high up the league as we can, because we know that every place in this league means money, and it’s something that’s going to help us move forward.”
