Nice guy Matt was a bit worse for wear

-

I SPOKE to a rather hungover Matt Damon this week about his new movie Monuments Men.

He had been out on the town with his co-star and director George Clooney and the two of them had obviously enjoyed a very good night.

Like the delectable George, Matt is very charming and down to earth, and it is clear that, much as he loves acting, his wife and daughters are the centre of his universe.

He is also refreshingly “unstarry”, turning up wearing a casual jumper with no entourage and happily chatting with all of us.

The movie, about a rather motley crew of experts and historians who try to recover precious works of art looted by the Nazis, is based on a true story and was a fascinating insight into an area of the SecondWorldWar that has been overlooked.

These brave men risked their lives to try to save works by Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Picasso from being lost or destroyed.

Watch out for a cameo from George Clooney’s dad at the end of the movie, although during a cast screening he was somewhat taken aback when, at the end of the credits, the dedication read “In memory of Nick Clooney”!

When his bemused, and very much still alive, father asked his son what was going on, George, who is a famous prankster, said that the movie wasn’t coming out for six months and it was cheaper to take these dedications out than put them in.

Thankfully his old man saw the funny side . . .
