Downsizing doesn’t mean downgrading

- By Murray Scougall

IF the kids have grown up and the family home just feels too big in your retirement years, there are plenty of options.

But gone are the days when looking to downsize in later years meant retirement homes.

Whether it’s housing estates exclusively for older people, assisted living developments or residential park homes, there are many ways to enjoy your later years.

McCarthy & Stone’s first Assisted Living development at Hilltree Court in Giffnock (pictured) offers one and two-bedroom apartments for those over 60 years old.

They have communal facilities and support services for residents when they need them, either now or in the future.

The development also has a 24-hour emergency call system, staff on site at all times, a guest suite, residents’ lounge and an onsite table service restaurant.

An hour of domestic service is provided each week as part of the service charge and personal care can be arranged on a short or long-term basis.

Claire McBlain, of McCarthy & Stone, said: “Our apartments are designed with additional features to allow retirees to retain their

Prices range from £194,950 to £240,950 for a one-bedroom apartment and two-bedroom apartments are available from £259,950.

Until February 28, buyers reserving a one-bedroom apartment will receive a host of additional extras worth thousands of pounds, including a year’s free car parking and a free daily lunch for a year.

Red Deer Village is a custombuilt gated community in the quiet village of Stepps, near Glasgow, exclusively for the over-50s.

With prices starting from £89,950 for a fully-furnished home, it gives potential buyers the ability to release equity tied-up in a large family home to downsize without sacrificing quality or lifestyle.

A modern park home looks and feels like a conventional bungalow, but requires minimum maintenance and has lower household costs, heating and insurance.

There is the choice of two or three-bedroom properties, each is contemporary, spacious and constructed using the highest quality fittings and furnishings.
