New controversy over Lib Dem ‘undesirable’
THE LIB DEMS are mired in more controversy after it emerged one of their biggest donors is on a police blacklist of “undesirables”.
Sudhir Choudhrie, who has donated more than £500,000 to the Lib Dems, was named on India’s Central Bureau of Investigation list of “unscrupulous people” in 2012.
Yet the Lib Dems continued to accept donations from him up to the end of last year.
Last week he was arrested as part of a major corruption inquiry into claims he acted as an intermediary for Rolls Royce to smooth deals in China and Indonesia.
It’s emerged that Nick Clegg hosted a reception for Mr Choudrie’s children’s charity, for which his wife Miriam is a patron, at a government mansion.
Sudhir Choudhrie has even been named on a list of potential Lib Dem peers despite a number of investigations into his business activities.
The Choudries deny the allegations they were involved in bribery.
The latest controversy follows the case of fraudster Michael Brown, who was the Lib Dems’ biggest ever donor but was jailed in 2012 after a three years on the run.
Former Lib Dem peer Lord Rennard is threatening to sue the party unless they reinstate him after an internal report found there was not enough evidence to support accusations of sexual harassment against him.
