McNamara says sorry to goal hero

JACKIE McNAMARA had to apologise to Dundee United match-winner John Rankin after crediting his goal to Ryan Dow.

Rankin notched United’s winner from a near-impossible angle before celebrating with jubilant fans behind the goal.

McNamara was caught up in his own celebrations on the touchline and mistakenly credited the goal to substitute Ryan Dow after the game.

After being put right, the Tangerines’ gaffer held his hands up and said sorry to Rankin. But the United midfielder insists he wasn’t offended — because as long as United win, he’s happy for praise to be heaped on his team-mates instead of him.

He said:“I was coming up the stairs after the game and the gaffer said he owed me an apology. I asked him what for and he told me he’d given Ryan Dow the credit for my goal!

“But I’m happy to remain anonymous, if I’m being honest. I’m just delighted to get the winner because we found ourselves in a difficult position today and caused a lot of our own problems.

“We got the second goal quite quickly, which helped us, and I was delighted to get on the score sheet for the third one. It has been a while!”

The win ended a winless United run stretching back to before Christmas, with some saying the Tangerines’ bubble had burst.

Rankin said:“You have to answer your critics and I felt today – and last week – we dug deep when we needed to.’’
