Higginbotham frustrated by a lack of fitness

- By Brian Fowlie sport@sundaypost.com

KALLUM HIGGINBOTHAM admitted he has to get fitter to pull Partick out of the play-off position.

The Englishman scored two goals and put in an outstanding performance, but had to watch his teammates throw away another lead from the sidelines.

Higginbotham was taken off after 83 minutes, with his side 3-2 ahead, and he conceded that helped Motherwell come back to snatch the points. He said: “I was pretty tired after 80 minutes and I think that’s why the manager took me off.The pitch was quite soft, but that’s no excuse.

“Having to make changes near the end does disrupt the team and maybe I’ll need to work a bit harder on my fitness.

“We’re just getting fed up of the hard luck stories. We just have to man up — it will be the play-offs for us at the end of the season unless we wise up and start seeing games out.

“I actually said at 3-3 that I could see them scoring because that’s the way it has been going all season.”

Higginbotham hit the net with a wonderful strike that finished off a mazy run.

He said“It was a good goal I scored but it didn’t really count for anything.”

Motherwell’s Stephen McManus found the energy to get up and head home the winner, despite having hardly trained for a fortnight.

He said:“I had an ankle operation after our game against Aberdeen last month.

“It was just a cleanup from an old injury I sustained during my Middlesbrough days.

“We’ve shown a lot of character this season and we have a good blend of experience and younger lads.”
