WEST Super League Premier Division champions AUCHINLECK TALBOT proved to be just too strong for Central District First champions RENFREW in the Final of the Evening Times Cup at Newlandsfield, with the silverware heading to Ayrshire after a 5-2 win.

Talbot had struck the woodwork before Renfrew’s Chris Zok had a chance saved.

The breakthrough for the Beechwood men came in 20 minutes when Mark Shankland shot home from the edge of the box.

Patrick O’Keefe had a chance to level shortly afterwards but he sent his effort inches wide, with the defender also seeing a header saved before the break.

The lead was doubled just three minutes after the restart when Robert Love scrambled the ball home from close range following a corner.

Renfrew got themselves back into the game on 50 minutes when Zok netted and, on 56 minutes, it looked like they had equalised when Jamie Benton sent in a curling effort but the ball came back off the bar.

Zok got his second to tie the score from three yards out five minutes later but Talbot hit the front again just after the hour mark when Bryan Young netted.

Love doubled his tally to make it four with quarter-of-an-hour left, and Dwayne Hyslop wrapped things up with a late fifth.

KILWINNING RANGERS will play in the top flight of the West Region after defeating SHETTLESTON 3-0 on Friday to win the play-off between the sides 5-3 on aggregate.

Dean Agnew netted just before half-time to tie the score at 3-3 after Wednesday night’s first leg, with the striker putting his side ahead when he grabbed their second goal just after the break.

Liam McGuinness sent Kilwinning up in style with an injury-time goal.

The season draws to a close on Wednesday at Cambuslang’s Somervell Park when POLLOK and GREENOCK meet in the Final of the Euroscot Engineering Central League Cup Final.
