1. Visit Otzi the Iceman at the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology in Bolzano. He’s one of the world’s bestpreserved mummies, was discovered in a glacier and is believed to be up to 5000 years old. www.iceman.it

3. See the Monte Maria Abbey. The Benedictine abbey was built in 1200 by the counts of Tarasp on a cliff to the west of Bugusio.
4. Every second Saturday in October there’s a Roman festival in Malles, when many sites are open to visitors free of charge. www.venosta.net/en
5. Take in the views from the Stelvio Pass and see deer, chamois and the occasional golden eagle in the Stelvio National Park.
6. Take the cable car to San Martino Al Monte for a panoramic view, nearly 6000ft up.
7. Try the ice cream at Gelateria Bruno, in Merano’s central Passerpromenade.
8. Have a day at the races in Merano. The Hippodrome (Ippodromo) holds 15,000 spectators and has views of the surrounding mountains.
