We heard gunshots and just locked ourselves in the room ... it was terrifying

-

ANOTHER British tourist caught up in the Turkey military coup that left hundreds dead and injured has described how he feared for his life.

Daniel Worley, 22, said he and friend Gemma Errington were forced to lock themselves in their hotel room in Marmaris during Friday night’s failed military coup.

He said they were particularly concerned because they had heard embattled Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan was staying in their resort. Daniel said: “It’s all over now but it was terrifying.

“We heard a helicopter over Marmaris and gunshots. We just locked ourselves in the room.

“Earlier we were sat on the balcony and could hear protesters. We panicked

because we found out the president was on vacation in Marmaris.”

Daniel explained he heard gunshots overhead from 1am until 6am, as violence and explosions were reported in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, as well as Istanbul, the country’s largest city.

He added: “We didn’t know what to do – just sit tight and hope we don’t get hurt, or that anything bad was going to happen. It was a terrifying night as we didn’t know what it meant or what was going to happen. It’s the unknown.

“We were watching the news the whole time and witnessing the horrific ordeal.

“I’ve never been so scared in my life.”

Daniel, from Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, said he had no plans to cut his holiday short and will return to the UK tomorrow as planned.

He said: “We aren’t letting this ruin our holiday.”
