Wha’ wud want to be a Bobbie?

-

WHEN I was a boy in Dundee, we used to sing about “the polis”.

There was a particular song though I can’t quite remember how it went.

It might have had the lines: Wha’ wud want to be a Bobbie, Dressed in Bobbies’ claes? A sugarella hat and a belly that is fat, And that will last me all ma days.

I wonder if anyone else remembers it or is it just my imagination? John Rankin, Lincoln.

Magazine memories

THE article on Jackie The Musical in last week’s Sunday Post caught my eye because my late mother used to write scripts for DC Thomson.

Writing as Fiona Turner, she had around 500 scripts published over 20 years up to the mid-1990s for picture stories in all of the girls’ magazines, including Jackie.

Philip Turner, Stockport.

Bullying worry

I’D like to commend the efforts of the recent Stand Up To Bullying campaign.

To hear that 16,000 young people in the UK are absent from school every year due to bullying is extremely worrying.

In The Boys’ Brigade we offer a neutral space where young people can learn, have fun and educate themselves on the dangers of bullying and where to seek advice.

I hope more organisations can shine a light on this issue and help young people struggling to find help. Bill Stevenson, Acting Chief Executive, The Boys’ Brigade.

Child’s play

IT was regrettable and ill-mannered for the SNP MPs to refuse to applaud David Cameron on his final day as Prime Minister.

They have done themselves absolutely no

favours at all by their childish behaviour. Such antics and fiascos have to stop – these politicians are the people we are all supposed to look up to.

All of them – from all parties – need to grow up, take a long hard look at themselves and put the future of the country before their own personal and petty squabbles.

Judi Martin, Maryculter.

Cool reception

I LOVE ice cream so I was interested in your taste test last week.

I have tried most brands over the years but now I only buy one – and I’m amazed it wasn’t included in your article.

It is Scotland’s own Mackie’s Madagascan Vanilla. No artificial flavours, colours or additives of any kind and – mixed with Glacé cherries, mixed peel, stem ginger or soft fruit – is absolutely delicious. If I was rating it, I’d give it eight out of five! L. Macdonald, Holmfirth.

A matter of record

REGARDING Colin Bower’s letter about too much Coronation Street, has he not heard of the record button?

This means you can watch the show at any time and never miss it.

As for the soap needing more characters, I’d say nonsense – there are enough as it is. Ross McInnes, Edinburgh.

Welcome delay

I WAS delighted to see the Named Person scheme could be delayed while awaiting the outcome of a Supreme Court decision.

This will allow some sensible time for the scheme to be thrown out as it is not fit for purpose, unworkable and unwelcome by teachers, social workers and health workers.

And finally...

I CAME up with a new word yesterday – plagiarism. Richard Raskin, via email.
