Al knows he is in a battle with Zander

ALAN MANNUS scaled a new career high with Northern Ireland at the Euros.

But the St Johnstone goalkeeper believes Perth understudy Zander Clark has the ability to aim higher.

Mannus has held on to his place as Saints’ first-choice stopper after returning from France.

However, he knows he’s in for a fight if he wants to stay top dog.

After turning in solid performances at the tail end of last season – and in the League Cup this term – Clark is snapping at Mannus’ heels.

And while the Northern Irishman is delighted boss Tommy Wright has kept the faith so far, he knows he can’t afford to put a foot wrong.

“I played on Sunday against Aberdeen and then against Hearts but it doesn’t mean I am No. 1,” said Mannus.

“I know Zander could easily have played and I could have been on the bench. It wouldn’t have been a shock to me if that had happened.

“Hopefully I can keep playing but I know Zander wants to be playing as well. I know I’ve a serious fight on my hands here but I always have done. I have always felt under pressure.

“Zander came in at the end of last season and did really well.

“He has all the attributes people look for in a goalkeeper, including height, so there is no reason he can’t go on and play at an even higher level than I have ever managed to do.”

For Mannus, travelling to a major tournament with his country was an experience he never thought he’d have.

It’s also one he reckons has made him a better player.

But after missing out on spending precious time with his baby son whilst in France, he is chuffed to be back home.

“The manager gave me a couple of weeks off after the Euros. That was brilliant,” he said.

“I could spend time with my mum and dad, my wife, Leanne, and our baby, Mason.

“He was only eight weeks old when I went away with the squad and I didn’t see him for a month.

“That was very difficult and I don’t know if I could do it again, to be honest.

“But it’s what you have to do and I’m not complaining. It was still a brilliant experience in France and I feel it has benefited me as a player.”
