Late Buddies strike denies Bairns a win

-

A TOM WALSH 20-yard strike denied Falkirk the chance to take over at the top of the table.

The Bairns had led hosts St Mirren from the ninth minute when Craig Sibbald fired home a free-kick.

But Walsh struck with three minutes to go to give the bottom club a point.

Leaders Queen of the South continued the unbeaten start to their league season in a goalless scrap at Dumbarton, which had very few clear-cut chances.

The home side had the better of the first half, with Robert Thomson and Craig Pettigrew each forcing a save from visiting keeper Lee Robinson.

Queens’ positional superiority was more evident after the restart but they were largely restricted to half chances, with Steven Rigg going closest with a header.

The Dumfries men must now wait for the result of today’s Hibs v Dundee United clash to see if they will retain top spot.

Dunfermline haven’t lost on their last 10 visits to Somerset Park and a share of the spoils always looked on the cards.

It was an emotional occasion as admission was cut to only £ 5 in tribute to former Ayr chairman Donald Cameron, who died recently.

Ayr almost made a flying start when a 30- yard shot from Brian Gilmour was tipped over by Sean Murdoch. Then they had a penalty claim denied when Adams went down after a push by Andy Geggan.

Cardle had the ball in the net for Pars after 63 minutes but it was disallowed for a foul.

A Stunning first- half free- kick from Ross Forbes gave Morton a 1-0 victory over visiting Raith Rovers – only their second league win of the season – and moved the League Cup semi- finalists up to sixth in the Championship.

Morton made a dream start, taking the lead after just 18 minutes. Ross Callachan tripped Jai Quitongo and Forbes, from 22 yards, curled a magnificent free-kick into the net.

Ton boss Jim Duffy said: “In terms of movement, we were terrific and looked a threat.

“Over the balance, we deserved to win, and I was also delighted we kept a clean sheet.”
