The Sunday Post (Newcastle)

ANGELS, UDDINGSTON

-

1 Location

Right on the main street, a two-minute walk from the train station.

2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

A stylish neighbourhood pub. The lounge is decked out in nice, contemporary décor and has lovely mood lighting later on. The busy car park indicated a full house.

3 SERVICE

Disappointingly, our table wasn’t ready until halfan-hour after the booked time, but it turned out to be worth the wait. Despite it being busy, our servers were polite and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed.

4 MENU

Great selection. A bit of everything really from pastas and salads to burgers, curries and steaks. Plenty of classics but also a few more unusual dishes such as haggis nachos, seafood crepes and aubergine, chickpea and orka Thai red curry.

5 TASTE

We plumped for the rump steak, served with chips, beer battered onion rings and pepper sauce, and the traditional steak pie with carrot and turnip mash. Both were sensational. The Tunnocks Snowball Sundae (yes, the famous factory is just round the corner) was lip-smackingly good.

6 PRICE

Very reasonable for tasty pub grub. The two for one deal which runs Monday to Thursday from 5pm is the perfect excuse to let someone else do the cooking and the dishes for a change! There’s also a very good set menu for a Sunday roast. Great value for money.

7 AMBIENCE

Buzzing for a weekday night, but remarkably relaxed.

8 SOMETHING SPECIAL

Take a trip down memory lane with the candy shop cocktail list... Drumsticks, Sherbet Lemons, Parma Violets, Refreshers…and the ultimate Tunnock’s Snowball. Just don’t spend all your pocket money at once!

9 TOILETS

Comfortable and spick-and-span clean.

10 VERDICT

17/20 Heavenly!
