From east end boy to champion of Europe

Born in Dalmarnock, in Glasgow’s East End, on March 4, 1951.

First side he played for was his local YMCA boys’ team.

Big break came when he signed for Celtic in July 1967, aged 16. He joined the Hoops despite the fact he’d grown up supporting fierce rivals Rangers.

Scored 112 goals in 204 matches for the club, winning four league titles, four Scottish Cups and one Scottish League Cup.

Signed for Liverpool in August 1977 for £440,000 – at the time a record fee between British clubs.

Scored 31 goals in 62 games in his first season – including the winning goal against Bruges in the 1978 European Cup final at Wembley.

Won six First Division championsh­ips, two FA Cups, four League Cups, seven Charity Shields, three European Cups and one UEFA Super Cup as a player with Liverpool.

Became the first player-manager in England in 1985 at the age of 34, guiding Liverpool to win the league title and the FA Cup in his first season.

Made 515 appearance­s for Liverpool as a player, scoring 172 goals.

Managed Liverpool until February 1991 and was named manager of the year three times.

Became manager of Blackburn Rovers in October 1991. He guided the club to promotion to the newly-formed Premiershi­p – the first time Rovers had reached the top flight since 1966.

Won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1995, becoming the fourth manager to lead two top-flight clubs to league titles.

Went on to manage Newcastle and Celtic before taking the helm at Liverpool again from 2011 to 2012. Awarded an MBE in 1984. Holds the record as Scotland’s most-capped player with 102 appearance­s and is joint-top goalscorer with 30 goals.
